Dear Alpha Gurus,
I was sure HP would have done the porting of vrestore to Linux just like
good old DEC did with vmsbackup which allows to read VMS backups onto
Tru64.
Unfortunately nobody did the porting and your suggestions are:
1) use the network to copy data. Of course data must be online and
both systems must be working at the same time. Unfortunately my Alpha
machines are going to be decommissioned and I have TeraBytes backed
up on vdumps tapes.
A suggested way to copy data is the following:
rsync -aHpx --delete --exclude quota.user --exclude quota.group
$from/ nacre:$to
2) use tar instead of vdump to write tapes that can be read on Linux
Our Doctor, Tom Blinn adds:
Your best bet is probably to use "tar" or the "pax" utility (or "cpio") to
prepare the tape archives to be read on Linux. These utilities are all able
to use tape formats that are portable and there are versions of them that
run on Linux, so you SHOULD be able to move data that way. Good Luck
After reading the "SHOULD" I feel much worst than before!
Massimiliano suggests to take a look on GNU tar
(more options like --preserve-ext2-flags) to backup fs on tru64.
HP talks a lot about the easy transition from Tru64 to newer OSs, but
can be easy a transition in which I loose all the data I backed up?
Anyway thanks to all of you:
