ldap client problem

We have es40's with tru64 5.1b-4 PK6. I installed the ldap
client utilities LDPUTILS from the assoc products CD.
When I run ldapsearch, it can get the info from redhat linux
server, but if I try to use it with ssl ( -p 636 -x), I get:

ber_flush: 14 bytes to sd 3
ldap_bind: Can't contact LDAP server

I have ldap.conf in /etc and /local/etc, with the TLS variables
pointing to the directory and file of the certificate,
but neither of the conf files are read at the time that I run ldapsearch.

Is ldap.conf suppose to be located somewhere else? I google around, but
couldnt find the answer. Can anyone help?

Thanks
