Thanks to Peter Stern (peter@wiscpa.weizmann.ac.il) and Marie-Claude Vialatte (MC.Vialatte@cust.univ-bpclermont.fr) for replying and clarifying. My original post: >>>> I'm trying to figure out what are the specific differences between user and group quotas. Is a group quota the maximum amount of disk space that each member in the group can use, or the max space for the group as a whole? Also, are quotas calculated by file ownership? Sorry for these amateur questions. Hopefully I'll post more challenging problems in the future. <<<<<<<< The answer was group quotas define the max amount of disk space that files owned by a particular group can take up -- not the max amount of space that files owned by each group member take up. The simplified answer: quotas are calculated by file ownership. (Group quotas -> group ownership, user quotas -> user ownership). Some things are easier than they seem. As always, however, I was very pleased by the response time.
