HP OpenVMS is pleased to announce support for the newest HP AlphaServer systems, the AlphaServer GS1280, ES80, and ES47
systems. These systems, based on the EV7 processor, represent a major evolutionary leap in performance breakthroughs. The new AlphaServer
systems running OpenVMS combine performance, scalability, and availability features that re-define mission-critical
enterprise and high-performance computing.
The performance improvements of OpenVMS V7.3-1 and the state-of-the-art hardware architecture of the new AlphaServer

On July 21, 2003, OpenVMS announced support for 32-processor AlphaServer GS1280
systems and for additional hardware options for the AlphaServer ES47, ES80, and GS1280 systems. Support details include the following:
- 32 processors for AlphaServer GS1280 systems. This doubles the number of processors
available in this series. Support for 64-processor AlphaServer GS1280 systems is planned
for the end of this year.
- 2GB, 64-Bit/66-MHz PCI-to-Fibre Channel host bus adapter, model number KGPSA-EA
(261329-B21). This new, host-based adapter, also known as the LP9802, supports 64-bit
PCI through one external channel that is an LC optical (SFF) connector. To support this new
host bus adapter, the latest Fibre Channel/SCSI patch kit is required (dec-axpvms-
vms731_fibre_scsi-v300—4 or higher). Boot support is not available for this adapter on
OpenVMS Alpha V7.3-1.
- 2D and 3D graphics support by means of the PCI variant of the ATI Radeon 7500 graphics
card (3X-PBXGG-AA) and a graphics software kit (VMS731_GRAPHICS-V0200 or higher). Until now, support for this graphics card was limited to the AGP card (3X-PBXGG-AB).

In May 2003, OpenVMS announced support for the following additional features and hardware
options on the latest release of the AlphaServer ES47, ES80, and GS1280
systems:
- Hard partitions, which enable you to run multiple instances of the operating system
concurrently in physically separate parts of the computer. This configuration makes it possible for you
to dedicate one partition to running one or more applications, dedicate another partition to running
one or more different applications, and so on, with maximum hardware security for each
partition. Hard partition support requires updated firmware (V6.5 console set) and a hard
partitioning patch kit (VMS731_PARTITIONING-V0100).
- 2D and 3D graphics support by means of the ATI Radeon 7500 graphics card and a graphics
software kit (VMS731_GRAPHICS-V0100). Support for the adapter on additional
AlphaServer systems will be announced shortly.
- X.25 and WANDD support by means of the PBXDD card and an update to the X.25 and
WANDD software (X25_V16ECO1 kit).
Also included are patch kits that resolve the issues with CPUSPINWAIT and with logging an
incorrect severity level for environmental events. The CPUSPINWAIT problem has been fixed
with the VMS731_Graphics-V0100 patch kit, and the Environmental Events Logged with Incorrect
Severity Level problem has been resolved with the VMS731_CPU270F-V0100 patch kit.
The updated HP OpenVMS New Features and Release Notes for HP AlphaServer ES47, ES80,
and GS1280 Series Systems, which includes detailed information about this additional support, will be
available on this website by May 21, 2003.
For detailed configuration support, please reference the AlphaServer QuickSpec for your system.
