MIKADO, a Virtual VAX based on a Real-time Operating System
Article Title: MIKADO, a Virtual VAX based on a Real-time Operating System - HTML ›, PDF ›
Article Abstract: Virtualization technology has made it feasible to design a very precise software model of older computer hardware, so that its software can be executed as a virtual client on modern hardware without modifications, avoiding a costly migration process. In most cases such 'cross-platform' virtual clients run on a Windows or Linux host system. This raises the question how well the real-time characteristics of the original hardware can be preserved in the virtual system, and what the alternatives are.
Stromasys designed in 2004 the MIKADO system, a virtual model of MicroVAX hardware running VMS, implemented on a QNX Neutrino real-time operating system (RTOS) running on I86 hardware. The purpose of the project was to understand the advantages of using an RTOS compared to Linux or Windows in building virtual hardware products. This article described the tools that were developed to measure any differences and to dynamically calibrate system performance to match the original hardware. The project resulted in a product that is on the market as 'FutureVAX'.
Author Bio: Dr. Robert Boers is the founder, CEO and Chairman of Stromasys SA in Geneva, Switzerland, a company specialized in the development of virtualized legacy computer systems and producer of the CHARON-VAX and CHARON-AXP virtual VAX and Alpha systems.
