Windows NT® Workstation 4.0 can be used as a client
for a variety of network environments, including those based on
Microsoft® Windows NT Server, UNIX, and Novell NetWare.
Windows NT Server
In conjunction with Microsoft
Windows NT Server, Windows NT Workstation 4.0 offers the
following:
- A common user interface, remote management,
and dial-out capability to remote servers
- Integrated user management, in part through common networking
features such as RAS Multilink, Dial-Up Networking, and PPTP
- Integrated systems management and
security
- Networking protocols such as TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, NetBEUI, DLC,
HTTP, SNA, and PPP
- Common API sets that allow customers
to develop and test applications on workstations and move them
to Windows NT Server for deployment
This environment also provides client-server interoperability
with line-of-business applications that run on
Windows NT Server.
UNIX
The Windows NT Services for UNIX add-on provides support for the UNIX industry-standard NFS
file system and delivers the following features:
- Resource sharing
- Remote administration
- Password synchronization
- UNIX shell and commands
NetWare
Windows NT Workstation 4.0 is also a
client for NetWare, with a version of Client Services for
NetWare that supports NetWare Directory Services (NDS). This enables
Windows NT Workstation to integrate with NDS-based Novell NetWare 4.x
servers running NDS to access files and print resources. This service is
integrated into Windows NT Workstation and provides the following features:
- NDS authentication, including authentication to multiple NDS trees
- Ability to browse NDS resources
- Ability to print to NDS print queues
- Full support for processing NetWare login scripts, NDS property
pages, and NDS passwords
For more information, refer to the Windows NT Workstation Resource Kit,
published by Microsoft Press.
Internet Client
The Internet support in Windows NT
Workstation includes the ability to use multiple modems and ISDN lines
simultaneously.
