YEAR 2000
BULLETIN:
Digi®
PortServer II®Communications Server Year 2000 Version Users
Dear
NCR Customer:
As you probably know, Year 2000 issues relate to a computer’s or an application’s ability to recognize dates and process data through or after December 31, 1999. A previous version of the firmware (pre 3.0.7) shipped with the PortServer II[1] Communications Server, a product manufactured by Digi International Incorporated,[2] is not Year 2000 compliant. A free firmware upgrade should correct this problem. Many of our PortServer II customers have already implemented this firmware upgrade; however we wanted to utilize this opportunity to inform all of our PortServer customers.
We want to ensure, by way of this letter, that this Year 2000 information is known to you, and we strongly recommend that it be appropriately communicated within your organization. You may be the only recipient of this notice at your organization, so if you are not the proper recipient, please immediately provide this letter to the appropriate person or persons so that the necessary corrective actions can be taken.
It is our understanding that the noncompliance is cosmetic. Apparently it only affects the display presented when “set time” is entered at the PortServer II command line interface. For the year 2000 and beyond, the non Y2K firmware would return “19xx” versus “20xx” when the “set time” command is executed. This would appear to be a non-catastrophic compliance issue, as it does not appear to affect the operation of the PortServer II itself. The Real Time Clock (RTC) has the capability to keep time to 2099. All accounting internally use the RTC to base calculations.
Our investigation shows that your PortServer II communications server was shipped with the non compliant Y2K firmware (3.0.6 and earlier); however, a simple and free firmware upgrade to version 3.0.7 or greater will make your product Y2K compliant. For your convenience, we have enclosed a copy of the latest PSII firmware and the appropriate release notes. If your PortServer II has been upgraded to 3.0.7 or greater, your PortServer II is Y2K compliant and no further upgrade is required.
For your convenience, we are including with this letter one flex diskette containing:
¨ Digi PortServer II Communications Server firmware version 3.0.11
¨ Release Notes documented for Port Server II Version 3.0.11
¨ Information on “How to setup Unix network node so that it serves as a tftp boot host for PSII firmware.
You can also locate the compliant version of the firmware from the Digi website:
http://support.digi.com/support/firmware/ps2/released/
or the NCR website:
Attachment 1 explains the upgrade paths. Please be sure to follow the upgrade instructions included with the firmware as well as normal industry practices for managing firmware changes, such as performing system backups.
NCR is pleased that Digi has supported NCR’s efforts to offer the new Y2K files. NCR regrets any inconvenience this may cause.
If you have any difficulties upgrading your systems to Digi PortServer II firmware version 3.0.11 or applying firmware patches, U.S. customers should feel free to contact NCR’s Support Center at (800) 262-7782. International customers can reference the list in Attachment 2 for assistance.
Sincerely,
Rhonda
