4. Known Issues

4.1 Install problems

  1. To install FaceWorks on an NT machine your user account must have administrative priveleges.

4.2 Geometry Editing problems

  1. When editing the eyes, keep them on the same horizontal axis. Placing the eyes at different heights causes them to display incorrectly.
  2. If you have your display set to low resolution (800 x 600) the templates in image preparation interface do not scale gracefully.
  3. Dog, cat, alien templates render with human profiles.
  4. If you start to see strange behavior in the geometry editor, save your work, quit and restart FaceWorks. There is a known crash when switching geometry editing modes. Try to avoid repeated mode switching.

4.3 Annotation Editing problems

  1. Mouth twitches on silence phoneme when playing.
  2. Importing a new audio file will remove current phone, head motions and expressions from the editor.
  3. The length of the audio clip currently determines the of the facial animation file.
  4. Do not import corrupt .wav files. This can cause FaceWorks to crash. The correct format is 16Khz 16bit.
  5. The first time you play an audio selection, you may hear audio clipping.
  6. Wink motion not occuring if previous expression had eyes closed.
  7. Expressions and head motions may play too late when a short range is played.
  8. Changes while paused will not be reflected when you unpause.
  9. Export Audio does nothing.
  10. If you reduce the size of the navigation bar, in the Annotation Tool, to minimum, you can't resize it back.
  11. Sometimes head motions will not end precisely at the marked end in the time line.
  12. Eye winking does not attack or decay.
  13. If you select a range that overlaps an expression or head motion playback will be spurious.
  14. After loading an *.fa file, File New may not always prompt to Save.
  15. Export empty phoneme file, and re-import. Crashes. Don't do this!
  16. If a range is too small, range representation cannot be moved.
  17. Cannot use URL reserved character set in the .smi file name.
  18. Phoneme edit is available when you select a range larger than a phone, but the phone won't change.
  19. Time events at the very end of the timeline don't play, if they are touching the very end of the timeline.
  20. Do not press record while playing.
  21. Using the edit dialog from the right click menu in the Annotation Editor allows you to modify any phoneme to any text. Exercise caution, ensure that the text you entered is a vaild phoneme.
  22. With a range selected, moving the range representation is difficult.
  23. Do not analyze a .wav file while playing.

4.4 Misc problems

  1. Moving from 8-bit to 16-bit color causes the face to display odd colors.
  2. You may experience problems when virtual memory is low. Do not run excess applications in the background.
  3. Do not minimize FaceWorks when Annotation Tool is playing audio file. This could result in your system hanging.
  4. You may experience redraw problems when resizing FaceWorks.
  5. When disk space is low you may get an error: "Empty Input File". This error will persist until you free up some disk space.
  6. It is possible to crash FaceWorks by exiting after doing File:New while playing audio file.
  7. Preferences are lost after saving.
  8. Cut, Copy Paste and Delete are always unavailable in the Edit Menu.
  9. If the controls, such as the buttons underneath the face, do not respond it is likely to be that your system is missing IE common controls. Try installing IE 4.0.
