MAYNARD, Mass., October 8, 1996 --- Digital Equipment Corporation today announced additions to its entry-level, desktop and rackmount line of OpenVMS VAX systems which are available with enhanced memory and storage capabilities, and come in a smaller footprint with pedestal and minitower designs for use on the desktop.
These enhancements ensure customers of lower cost of ownership and operation, and compatibility with earlier operating systems.
Available for ordering immediately worldwide, the VAX servers announced today are:

These desktop and rackmount VAX systems support disks that range from 1.0 to 4.3 gigabytes, with in-box maximums of 19.2 gigabytes. Optional disk expansion boxes can increase this capacity up to 60.2 gigabytes on the MicroVAX systems and up to 335.4 gigabytes on the VAX 4100 systems.
The new systems have double the memory expansion over the previous systems, from 128 megabytes to 256 megabytes, and use SIMM (Single In-Line Memory Module) memory, the same as used in the AlphaServer line, to lower the cost of ownership. According to Shannon, "the new VAX systems' reliance on SIMM memory will enable customers to build memory-rich systems that cost only about one-third as much as configurations based on proprietary VAX memory options."
The VAX servers will ship with OpenVMS V6.2, and are backward compatible with the popular earlier version, OpenVMS V5.5-2. As a result, customers can upgrade their VAX systems knowing that their mission-critical applications will continue to run unchanged.
First deliveries of the new MicroVAX 3100 systems will be in mid-November 1996, and late December 1996 for the VAX 4000 model 108 system. The increased 256mb memory capability will be available in early 1997.
