My 3000/300LX has suddenly decided to partially leave the network. All
telnet and rlogin attempts in and out hang after making a connection and
many minutes later (10+) will drop with a "read: Connection reset....".
During this time millions of ping packets can be successfully transmitted
and received by "ping -f" running simultaneously on the Alpha (pointed to
an Ultrix box) and by "ping -f" running on SCO (486) and pointed to the
alpha. "Traceroute" works but incoming mail hangs with:
(Deferred: Connection timed out during result wait with koibi)
Outgoing mail puts the following on the target system:
<<< HELO koibito.iisc.com
<<< MAIL From:<root_at_koibito.iisc.com>
in a file (such as /usr/spool/mqueue/xfAA27146 on the Ultrix box) . But the
Alpha sendmail hangs , such that:
ps auwxx gives:
root 478 0.0 0.5 928k 312k ?? I 07:30:52 0:00.03 -AA00476
asoko.IISC.COM: result w (sendmail).
This is the second time that this has happened. The first time we swapped out
2 motherboards , one cpu daughter board, power supply and even the drive. The
problem went away while the CE was here without us ever finding a cause. Now
it has come back (one month later) and it occurred suddenly in the midst of
normal operations. Please note that all of the 'easy' stuff has been checked
and double checked. (eg 'gated', 'named', the cable/terminations , etc.
