Howdy,
We just received some AS 4/233's yesterday, and so I thought to try them
up against our (18 month old) 3000/400's. I did a make stage1 of gcc on
each of the machines, each had 64M of memory, and was building on local
disk - and the older machine easily finished before the newer (1750 seconds
vs 1500 seconds). We were told that these newer systems should be easily
faster than the old systems, but this appears to be not the case.
The two systems:
AXP 3000/400, 64M memory, OSF1 albany V2.0 240 alpha
AS 4/233, 64M memory, OSF1 alford V3.0 358.78 alpha
(An aside - DEC sold us and shipped us systems _without_ monitor
cables - this is _really_ _really_ shoddy service; I'd expect them
to be able to do a minor amount of sanity checking on an order to
make sure they are shipping a working configuration...)
Anthony
(and yes, this means I have a 3.0 system now, so I can work at making
sure trace, top, & the other stuff that people keep asking me about work :)
