Getty on serial line

Hi fellow OSFers!

DECAlpha 2000/300
OSF/1 2.1

Has anyone attempted starting a getty process on a serial line -
specifically /dev/tty00?

When I enter:

/usr/sbin/getty /dev/tty00 9600 vt100

on the command line, I get no errors, but ps shows no getty process
running. I've also tried putting the appropriate line into inittab -
tty00:23:respawn:/usr/sbin/getty /dev/tty00 9600 vt100

and forcing a read by using "init q", but still no success.

Am I missing something? Should I go back to bed and forget the
whole thing?

Many thanks for any enlightenment.

Lyn
