Is rx26 supported on 3000-500?

I would like help from someone who is running an rx26 from
a 3000-X00 machine. I have swapped out the drive and
scsi adapter board with no change in behaviour.
At this time, its not clear whether hardware or software is wrong.

I'm attempting to use 1.44 Mb floppy media.
I haven't made any changes in the kernel.

scu format density HD succeeds.
scu write media and read media fail with "Nonrecoverable media error"
tar fails with "tape write error: I/O error" (or read error, depending)

SoftWindows is unable to format, read, or write.

In all cases, I select /dev/rrz5c; the device announces itself during
bootup as scsi id 5, RX26. Attempted operations turn on the drive select
light and turn on the motor.

Suggestions? Flames?
