We have a new Alpha 2000, Model 300 with OSF/1 v3.0.
I am new to managing a UNIX system and to the DEC Alpha; I suspect my problem
may well have a simple solution.
The problem is trying to install a 9 GB Seagate ST410800N SCSI hard drive.
I've tried to infer the appropriate steps from the man pages, this group's
archives, and the System Administration documentation, but the system always
seems to hang while running newfs.
Here's basically what I've tried:
- checked the existing SCSI IDs (0 - an internal 1 GB drive and 4 - a CD-ROM)
- assigned the ST410800 to an open ID (6)
- cp /vmunix /usr/vmunix.save
- /usr/sbin/shutdown -r now
- log on as root, shutdown to single user mode
- mount /usr
- run /usr/sbin/doconfig for <system name>
- /mv /sys/<system name>/vmunix /vmunix
- /usr/sbin/shutdown -r now
- disklabel -w -r /dev/rz6 ST41080 "MARSHALL Ext 1"
- disklabel -r /dev/rrz6a (which produces a long report:)
(disklabel report - reproduced from my notes)

- /usr/sbin/newfs /dev/rrz6a
works fine: 1795 sectors in last cyl.(?) unallocated
67.1 MB in size
super-block backups at 32, 57632, 115232
- /usr/sbin/newfs /dev/rrz6b
works fine: 3590 sectors in last cyl.(?) unallocated
134.2 MB in size
super-block backups at 32, 57632, 115232, 172832, 230432
- when I try the same thing with the g partition, the system invariably seems
to crash
- several times it has only reported out 5-10 lines of super-block
backup locations
- once it got all the way through (running newfs -N reports all the
locations without running the command)
- then it (the machine?) just stops
- in my ignorance, I also tried AdvFS (ie, mkfdmn and then mkfset) but again
the machine seems to just stop when running mkfset
Any suggestions?
Thanks very much for any help you can offer.
