Dear managers:

I had posted an inquiry last night following the successful resolution of
the DTR-handling bug in the OSF1 "ACE" serial port driver on the
new alphastations. The problem was that the MODEM "CONNECT" message was being
picked up by the system and treated as a "login" name. After that, the
login session was printing out ONLY upper case characters (and the real
upper case characters were prepended with "\".

Thanks to all those kind people who replied so promptly:

The two problems were in fact related. The system had assumed
the terminal I am logging in from is upper-case ONLY because the first
character it received is "C" from "CONNECT".

The cure is simply to turn off MODEM response (atq1 on the GVC I have)

thanks all...
