We have been having difficulties with our DEC 2100/500's Standard
I/O Ethernet Interface since we recieved it. DEC was reluctant
at first, but then admitted that our AUI connection to a DELNI
was going to give us problems. Engineering said that the DELNI
was to blame since it is incompatible with the 2100. We thought
it was sort of funny to consider an older piece of equipment
incompatible with the newer alpha, would have thought it was the
other way around. Since DEC could not provide an immediate solution
we switched from using the AUI port on the 2100 to using the
10BaseT port to get a network connection.
Needless to say, we saw a dramatic improvement in performance once we
were bypassing the 2100 / DELNI incompatibility. In checking into
another host on our network we were running a Macintosh program that sends
8 byte ICMP packets as a means of testing the IP connection, and noticed
that our DEC 2100 had a packet loss of 12%-13%, well above the accepted 1%.
DEC replaced our Standard I/O board revision and that still did not
fix the 2100's loss. Let me mention that all other machines on the
same leg of the network as the 2100 have no packet loss.
Has anyone had similar problems with their 2100/500?
(we're running OSF/1 2.0b)
