I'm one of the engineers working on the DECladebug debugger. This is
the product whose installation script tried to send a piece of mail
back to Digital, which Jim Wright <jwright_at_phy.ucsf.edu> noticed and
sent to this mailing list about.
The explanation: the install script for the DECladebug debugger did
indeed send mail back to us. This was done awhile ago so that we
could get some stats about who was installing our kit (for internal
kits only!). The fact that this stuff got out into a customer-visible
kit was pure oversight on the part of us on the DECladebug debugger
project only, and we regret the error.
Please accept our apologies for this. Digital does not have a
corporate policy of being surreptitious :-) and I'm sure there are no
other Digital products whose install scripts do this same sort of
thing.
The DECladebug debugger install scripts have been fixed (by me!) so
that this will not happen again in future releases of DEC OSF/1.
