SUMMARY: more on number of users...

A simple fix if you just want to login remotely (no more than one user
can be on the console at the same time anyway):

'rsh remote-host xterm -display local-host:0'
this did not count as a login so it effectively gave me an unlimited
number of windows on the remote machine [of course limited by the
number of ptys].
