Try DropStuff with Expander Enhancer from Aladdin Software. They have a
shareware version available from many Mac archives including:

ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu in the directory: /Mac/Utilities
the file is: StuffItExpander.3.0.7.hqx
it is a bin-hex'ed self-extracting utility

This program is quite robust and recognizes just about any compression/
encoding format you might choose to name (tar, .Z, .gz, .zip, UUencoding, .cpt,
.sit, .bin, .hqx, .pkg, .arc) Quite a handy little utility to have around.
