Summary:
The majority of those responding had nothing but good things
to say about Advfs.
Most strongly suggested getting the Polycenter Advfs Ultilities.
Without the Utilities a file domain is limited to a single volume,
and the only advantage to having Advfs in this case would be
its ability to survive crashes over UFS.
Note was also made to the version of OSF/1:Advfs. To be safe it
was suggested to be at 3.0 or higher, although patches are
available for earlier versions.
The most notable features of Advfs Utilities was the addvol,
rmvol, and defrag. These give Advfs a flexibility that
makes UFS pale by comparison.
One of the cons is the fact that if a disk goes bad within
a multiple volume file domain, the entire file domain is
useless. Up to date backups are essential to recovery in
this case.
Another con involved the necessity to redo any backup scripts
changing dump and restore to vdump and vrestore, both of which
have different switches from the UFS companions.
From my brief study comparison of Advfs w/ Utilities and
UFS it seems that Advfs is the way to go.
