About a week ago I had a DEC 3000 go down deader than a door nail. The green
power supply light was out, and turning the switch on and off had no effect. I
also tried replacing the power cord and using a different outlet. The system
was in a computer room environment with about 6 other DEC 3000 boxes. The
outlets I used are connected to a 20KVA UPS. After about five minutes the
system "magicly" came back on.
I called DEC Field Service and the Engineer did some research and found that
"Rev F" power supplies had an intermitent problem with power loss. He came down
and we opened the unit to discover that it had a "Rev K" power supply, much
higher than "Rev F".
Anyone else out there have power supply problems with DEC 3000 boxes at greater
than "Rev F"? I'm assuming that this has somthing to do with a faulty thermal
shutdown mechanism, but I could be wrong about that. The unit in question did
have an internal RZ26L drive installed, but no other options. I don't think I
was overloading the power supply.
Thanks in advance for the feedback.
