restore wanting too many vols?

We recently tried to do a complete system restore from 3rd party SCSI 4mm
tape drive (Python).

Although the original save looked fine and was contained on one tape, the
restore advances to the end of the tape and asks for the next volume and
also does not complete the restore.

My operator say that he's *heard* that some 4mm tapes have a problem with
the end of tape marker (Sony), but we are using Maxell.

We've now seen this on two different machines, so it's not clear if:

1. We neglected/incorrectly set some kind of parameter on the original dump.

2. There really is a problem with these particular tapes.

3. There is some kind of problem with dump.

4. There is some kind of problem with restore.

Sorry if this question is inappropriate for this group - we've run out of ideas.

Running a 3000/600s with OSF V2.0.

THANKS!
