yppasswdd locking??

We have run into an interesting problem with yppasswdd. Although
a "strings" command on the executable indicates that locking is
supported, we are unable to find the right location, name and
incantations to make it work. Specifically, when we are editing
the nis passwd file, users can change their password using the
yppasswd command on a remote system, then when the passwd file is
saved and pushed, the password reverts to its previous state.
We have tried putting a ptmp file in /etc, /var/yp, /var/yp/src.
Any suggestions? Here are the strings in rpc.yppasswdd which
lead us to believe that locking is supported:

password file busy - try again.
password temp file open bug %s %m.
