The clue came from Ray Bellis <Ray.Bellis_at_psy.ox.ac.uk>.

Exactly.
lprsetup made the :rw:\ entry in printcap. I deleted it. It works fine.

Surprisingly, Ray Bellis' answer arrived long before my question was mirrored
back to me !!!!
