The answer is to put a default disklabel onto the disk with
disklabel -w -r /dev/rrz12c junk
I have to admit I had disregarded the -w option because the man page states
The second form of the command, with the -w flag, writes a standard label
on the designated drive. You must specify the disk and the disk type as
described in the /etc/disktab file.
And quite clearly I don't have a disktab entry for junk - but that's
apparently how to get disklabel to pick up the device geometry from
the disk.
