Disklabel Problems with 9Gbyte Seagate disk

Hello all,

One of our 9Gbyte Seagate disks recently died and I have just got a replacement.

Before putting it to real use I thought I would test it out by completely filling it with data the run a few tests with diskx.

So I have connected it to a 3000/400 OSF/1 V3.0 and done the following
newfs /dev/rrz12c
mounted it and filled it with data all OK

but I cannot run diskx or disklabel - here is a transcript of my attempts.

I have tried the following with the disk mounted and dismounted.

blake# /usr/field/diskx -r -f /dev/rrz12c

DISKX - DEC OSF/1 Disk Exerciser.

Testing disk device /dev/rrz12c.

Read-only Transfer Testing

This test verifies that reads will succeed. The data is not
verified in any way. Since this test does not write to the disk
there is no possibility of file system damage.
Reads will be done using random size transfers. The read
size will be randomly selected from the range 512 to 65536 bytes.
Reads will be issued to random locations on the disk. To accomplish this
a seek will be issued before each read to force a read of a different
disk region.

Testing will continue until an interrupt signal is received.

blake# disklabel -w /dev/rrz12c
usage: disklabel [-r] disk (to read label)
or disklabel -w [-r] [-t advfs | ufs] disk type [ packid ] [ xxboot bootxx ](to write label)
or disklabel -wn [-r] disk type [ packid ] (to write label without bootstrap)
or disklabel -e [-r] disk (to edit label)
or disklabel -R [-r] [-t advfs | ufs] [-n] disk protofile [ type | xxboot bootxx ](to restore label)
or disklabel [-NW] disk (to write disable/enable label)
or disklabel -z disk (to zero label)
blake# disklabel -w /dev/rrz12c /dev/rrz12c
disklabel: ioctl DIOCWDINFO: No disk label on disk;
use "disklabel -r" to install initial label

Any idea what has gone wrong - or how to label this disk.
I expect I am missing something obvious but just cannot see what.

Thanks for any help.

Tim.
