Hi,
I've got a bit of a situation here that I could use some advice with.
I currently have a DEC3000 model 300 box running OSF/1 V.2.0. My manager
recently purchased an Alphastation 400 running OSF/1 V.3.2.
My task is to move all of the 600 users as well as gopher, httpd, etc.
from the one box to the other. There is a couple of complications since
the .5G disk that is currently the boot disk on the 3000 needs to have
all of its data transferred to a 1G disk on the Alphastation. My plan for
this is as follows:
- upgrade the Dec3000 to V.3.0 and then to V.3.2 (I was told by Dec that
I would have to do this in two steps.)
- somehow move the / and /usr filesystem that is currently on the 3000
.5G drive to the 1G drive on the Alphastation (perhaps copy all of
the data over using an NFS mount or simply by whipeing the boot disk
on the Alphastation and installing it on the 3000's SCSI chain.
- physically install the other 2 2G drives (containing news and user
space) that are on the 3000 to the Alphastation
- boot the Alphastation using the genvmunix kernal (which Dec tells me
will boot on any platform) and do a rebuild.
- pray.
The trick, in my mind will be how to transfer the / and /usr filesystems
onto the 1G drive. Numerous tape backups WILL be produced :-).
Any suggestions from people who have performed similar feats are greatly
appreciated.
