I asked the alpha-osf-managers list:

>... the problem is that perl compiles OK and passes
>the test scripts, even runs most of the old perl scripts I've tried it on,
>but on trying to make the perlref stuff I get core dumps

I am indebted to the following wizards:
        Guy Helmer <ghelmer_at_alpha.dsu.edu>
        John Stoffel <john_at_WPI.EDU>
        Mike Iglesias <iglesias_at_draco.acs.uci.edu>
        Spider Boardman <spider_at_orb.nashua.nh.us>
who all kindly responded with much the same advice which solved the problem.

It turns out that there are a series of "unofficial" patches to perl5.001
(so far comprising patches 1a through 1e) which are not found in most of
the standard perl5.0001.tar.gz distribution sets. These patches are
being maintained by Andy Dougherty <doughera_at_lafcol.lafayette.edu>
and are available (among other places) from:
        ftp.cis.ufl.edu:/pub/perl/src/5.0
        ftp.wpi.edu:/perl5

The perl5 refguide exercises a known bug in "getopts.pl" which has been fixed.

Using the dec_osf hints with the standard OSF/1 cc in the Configure script,
perl-5.001e compiles with no problems, passes its tests, *and* processes
the refguide and all my old perl scripts.

Once again, the alpha-osf-managers list comes to the rescue :-)

Cheers,
Alex.
