many defunct processes on OSF 3.0.

I am getting many defunct processes parented by inetd on a machine running
OSF/1 3.0. There is more than one different program; some telnetd, some
a local daemon which runs out of inetd. Is this problem familiar to
anyone? As far as I know there is no situation under which inetd should
have defunct children (I would expect it to handle SIGCHLD and dispose of
them).
