SUMMARY: X text editors

Greetings:

Since "Notepad" seems inexplicably slow and, in a word, lame,
we have some users who wanted an X-based text editor (I'm a vi man
myself but some refuse to see reason! :) )

The respondents recommended the following:

nedit -> available at ftp.fnal.gov in /pub/nedit
(they have binaries and source code)
xedit -> which does come with X11R5
xbrose -> no address given
and GNU Emacs 19.x -> no address given

I installed nedit and really like it. Xedit is indeed available on
Alpha's but it has a less "friendly" look and feel. nedit seems quite
customizable and is very fast. Since this was the overriding criteria,
it was declared the winner.

Thanks to the many respondents:
