SUMMARY: creating a new system disk

A big thanks to all who replied. I was close with the things I had done,
but was still missing a couple pieces of the puzzle. Those pieces were
completed from this list.

What I needed to do, but hadn't done, is to specify the primary (and
secondary?) boot programs with disklabel. After I specified them and then
copied over the root partition, which is ADVfs, I got the disk to boot and
now everything is moved over to my new disk. A closer reading of the
disklabel page probably would have told me this info, but I don't think I
would have understood what had to be done with the pointers I received from
out there. Thanks.
