Alpha OSF problems...Help!

Hi, I'm working with a DEC Alpha Server 1000 running OSF1 and am
having a few problems.

1.) I'm unable to su to root. The only way I can get root access is to
log in as root from the console. If I log in as someone else or telnet
from another machine, I'm unable to su to root. I'm assuming I need to
change something somewhere to fix this, but I haven't been able to find
out what to do to this point. Anyone know what I need to do?

2.) The Alpha is acting as a Web server running Netscape's HTTPD server
software. I want to be able to disable browsing of directories with the
http protocol. (say if someone goes to the URL http://foo.bar.com/foo/
- they'll get a directory listing of the foo directory. I want them to
be unable to do that). I know with Windows NT, you can put a 'nobrowse'
file in the directory you want to restrict, but I don't know how or if
it's possible with OSF (or maybe even with Netscape's HTTPD server?).
Any ideas?

3.) This is more technical. Right now I have a DEC VT510 console
hooked up to it. I have a spare VGA monitor I want to use with it so I
can use Motif or Xwindows or whatever. Anyway, I've gone to the console
prompt and changed the console variable to 'graphics' ('set console
graphics'). I then power cycle it - problem is nothing happens
differently. Everything comes up on the VT510 console like before. The
VGA monitor does display the Cirrus video card bios message, though,
then it goes blue with a cursor blinking in the top left corner.
Anyway, I found if I plug the keyboard (which is normally plugged into
the back of the VT510) into the main Alpha unit, and then power cycle,
the startup starts to go on the VGA monitor and makes it about halfway
through and then gives me this:

Error: unable to install generic console
Error: Kernel not configured for graphics console
Attempting to switch to alternate console

At this point the output goes back to the VT510. However, when the
keyboard is plugged into the Alpha unit, it won't work. I have to plug
it back into the VT510 to get it to work. This seems very weird to me,
and DEC wasn't very helpful in assisting me. Any ideas?

Well, that's it. If anyone can help with any or all of the
problems, I'd be eternally grateful. :) Thanks!!!

Jeff
