NFS write problems to SGI from OSF/1

Has anyone come across large files being corrupted when written to an SGI
(iris4d Irix 5.3, NFS 3.0) from an OSF/1 (3.2A) system? I'm not very
familiar with Irix? We get the following message:

        cp: ./foo: Error 588 occurred.

SGI naturally blames Digital...
