error logging

 Hi,
we would like to read directly the error messages that came from the system
(alpha 3000/500 osf/1 v2.1) using the /dev/klog device, instead of use
 the syslogd.
But we have seen that if syslogd is running the file cannot be opened and
errno is set to 16. If the syslog is stopped then the file can be read.
 So I have some questions:
 1) Does anybody know if there is a way to have more process that are reading
    the file /dev/klog concurently?
 2) How to read directly the /dev/console?
 3) We were not able to get kernel messages from /dev/streams/log, is this correct?
Must the kernel be configured in some way in order to have these messages?

 Thank in advance, I'll summarize.
