VGA monitors on a DEC 2100?

According to the documentation any old VGA monitor is supposed to work
on the 2100, yet everyone I try can't sync or get the horiz right.
Do I need to set something on the system to get a standard 14 inch
VGA monitor to work or am I stuck with using DEC's monitor on the
system?
