I am running V3.2b of OSF/1. I have a need for an idle process/line
killing daemon that will kill off any processes that are running under
the following circumstances :
1) I have users who telnet into my system and end up in a Perl script
that gives them a menu of choices. Sometimes, the user will kill
the telnet application they are using without exiting my script
properly. This leaves a Perl script running under the userid of
the account that was logged in. Why this is happening I do not
know. The Perl script is dead simple. For some reason, the OS
is not killing the process when the socket is terminated or should
be terminated. I am running Perl V5.000.
2) I have users who log in to my system using POP3. Sometimes, the
user POP3D process hangs around after the user has finished using
the mail system. I know this could be related to the POP3D daemon
I am using, which I am investigating on another journey.
I know that getty will let me control timing out a line, but this won't
work in my environment because I keep atleast 4 or 5 ptys open to my
system from my UNIX Workstation for days on end. If getty could be
selective about what lines and users it kills, then it would be a good
fit. I guess I am looking for something like HITMAN that is available
for the VAX/VMS environment.
