I've had this problem on my OSF box for quite a while but I haven't had
time to correct it until today. (It also hasn't been a big problem until
lately). Ftp into the OSF box does not work for anyone. The following
always occurs:
sdl> ftp george
Name (george:ejones): ejones
User ejones access denied.
Login failed.
This started after I installed 3.2. I've checked the /etc/inetd.conf:
ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/ftpd ftpd
the permissions on ftp itself:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 bin bin 139264 Feb 2 23:58 /bin/ftp
I've even tried copying over and older version of the ftp binary with the
same results. The only entries in /etc/ftpusers are root and uucp.
if ftpd is run as ftpd -dl, the follwoing appears in the syslog:
Jul 6 13:36:53 george ftpd[1349]: FTP LOGIN REFUSED FROM sdl.psych.wright.edu,
ejones
Telnet works as does rcp and others. I have not installed enhanced security.
So, I have no idea why access is denied for ftp. Can anyone provide me
with ideas or suggestions to overcome this problem? As usual, I will
summarize. Thanks in advance.
