Unusually Long Network Lag Time

Hello OSFfers!

I have two Alpha 3300s. They both run OSF V2.0. The first system (alpha)
is my name server. It only has about 8 users, who do things like e-mail,
gopher, telnet, lynx. The second system (beta) has about 1200 users, who
also use e-mail, gopher, telnet, lynx. Beta averages about 10-15 users
at any given time. I have seen beta with 38 users, but that does not
happen frequently.

Alpha and Beta can ping hosts on the net with no problem. When performing
other operations like finger, ftp, and telnet, beta experiences a
*serious* lag time in connecting.

Alpha and Beta are physically located next to each other. I just did an
experiment in which I fingered the same location on both systems; Beta's
response was about 10 seconds slower than Alpha.s. I then FTPd to the
same site on both systems; Alpha returned an almost immediate response --
Beta's response was 1.5 minutes slower than Alphas.

I've gone throught the section in the bookreader on troubleshooting
network problems; I've made sure that Beta knows that Alpha is the
nameserver. I'm not sure where to go next in tracking down this problem.

Thanks in advance for your help!
