Using a separated Ethernet with static routes, Possible ?

We have a OSF/1 AXP cluster of 3 machines we want to configure like this:

---+---------+-------+---- Our Class B LAN NET.ADDR.X.Y
   |1.74 |1.75 |1.76
[apple] [pear] [nut]
+---------+-------+ Local Ethernet for NFS traffic
    1.174 1.175 1.176
 apple-l pear-l nut-l

I tried to made a static route entry with

route add -node -interface apple-l pear-l and for the other nodes
similar

The routing tables netstat -r lists the correct name and interface
but I can't make a connection trough that interface.

What I intent to do is make a NFS automounts over the local network
to unload network traffic at the segment in that building.

We don't have IP subnets here, but use a bridging topology without
subnet masks.

Can this be done with static routes and netmasks 255.255.0.0 or do I have to
run gated/routed with some special tricks ?

The manuals did not clarify this particular situation.

Thanx in advance....
