SUMMARY: Reverse Telnet (IP) to Terminal Servers

It looks like the Xyplex server has something, but that's about it. We have
DECservers and from the looks of the replies, there isn't much that can be
done.

thanks,
dan

Original Question:
----------------
Is there a way to configure ttys to talk to terminal servers (DECserver 90M) on
OSF using TCP/IP instead of LAT. Reverse telnet? Something like:

/usr/sbin/latcp -A -ptty0a -HDECSERVER1 -RPORT_1

in the latstartup.conf file works well. But I want to investigate equivalent
functionality using IP.

There is such a thing - I use it at home. I think I found it on the Xylogics
ftp site (presumably ftp.xylogics.com) as part of a tar file of support code
for their annexen.

it's called 'rtelnet' or something similar.

With reverse LAT, DEC had control over the horizontal and the vertical. With
RTEL, however, there is less consistancy, since in many ways DEC entered the
TCP/IP market late. There is an RFC (sorry, don't know the number off hand)
that specifies some of RTEL's operational requirements, but a number of
vendors (LANtronix, amongst them) had proprietary implementations and shipped
their own drivers to support the interface. (warning: this history is now
about four years old!)

Thus, you must not only have software on the AXP that supports RTEL, you must
also have a terminal server that supports the same variant(s).

Ages ago I did something like this on a Xyplex server. There each port
had a default portnumber (port 2000 was the console, port1=2100, etc.
up to 3600), so a
telnet tsrv1 2100 connected to serial port 1. I had to enable this first
(had to set th eport to remote or something).

I am not sure about DECservers but you can setup a stream connection
on Xyplex terminal server. Xyplex uses 2000 + (100 * the port number i.e. 5)
, so the connection port would be 2500. The setup would look somthing
like this xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx port 2500 and that would connect your host
directly to port 5 on the terninal server. Of course the t.s. port has
to be setup. Hope this helps you.

dunno about dec stuff, but i've been using "rtelnet" with xylogics'
annex terminal servers for years. it has been very useful and has
worked like a charm.
