If the sho config command at the boot prompt shows anything sV2.1 at the con
sole, do not upgrade you firmware to version 6.1 use 6.0. It will hose your
machine if a 3000/400 good and the repair bill maybe as high as $3200( report
   I got for this repair).,

I just ran into the same upgrade problem last week. Luckily, the
morning I was about to perform the upgrade I saw this in a summary
post to alpha-osf-managers (it was buried, unfortunately, in a
   general summary about upgrading):

   ************************************************************

   Hi,

A word of warning....be careful when you do the firmware upgrade. There
is an errata sheet sent with the firmware upgrade that warns about doing
upgrades on a 3000/400. If you don't have the proper SROM version you
will toast your machine and have to call field service. A way to check
is to do show config at the console level:

>>> show config

   CPU OK KN15-AA-V6.1-S45E-I077-sV2.1-DECchip 21064 P3.0
                                           ^^^^
SROM: if you have anything below
                                                 V2.1 you should upgrade the
                                                 SROM before upgrading the
                                                 firmware V6.1.

Field service will have to get you the proper SROM version.

I was upgrading from OSF 1.3 to 3.2 as well and it turns out my SROM was at
v1.0, DEC field service came out and put in a v2.1 chip for me. Two other
important points that may interest you -
   1) there was not an errata sheet in the documentation I got with a
OSF V3.2 packet, it may only be in kits sent with V3.2B (I'm not sure),
   2) BEFORE you put in the correct SROM chip, you must first get the
firmware to v3.0 (mine was at 2.4), otherwise you'll get the same problem
(DEC field service informed me of this).

OK, the Release Notes for the 3.2 release disk set contains a table
(Table 2-1: Firmware requirements)

Alpha System Minimum Firmware Level
.
.
DEC 3000 systems Version 6.0
.
.

So it looks like I need a firmware upgrade to v6.0. The reports above about
firmware problems appear to relate to a firmware upgrade to *v6.1*.

***
I presume I can upgrade the firmware to 6.0 without needing to worry
about my SROM.
Is this correct?
My firmware is currently at 3.0 if this has any bearing.

P.S. !! I have never done a firmware upgrade before. Is there
documentation on how to do this supplied with the OSF 3.2 CD disk set?
There didnt seem to be any details in DEC_OSF1_Release_Notes or
DEC_OSF1_Installation_Guide.
