Hi there folks,
Before posting I placed 2 calls w/ DEC and tried to reach the
archive through WWW, but was unable to do so. If the answer is
obvious, please don't blast me too bad!

I have a few new ALCOR machines, the ALphastation 600 5/266
type, and they came w/ factory installed software, and are
configured, and up and running on the net etc...

I have a problem that seems to have to do with the X color map,
or the fact that the grahpics card is too fancy for its own good.

I can't get MPEG_PLAY to run, I can't get SoftWindows to run in
color (can't allocate 256 colors), and I can't get alphavcr to
run on mpeg files.

alphavcr gives an error message that complains that it can't
do 8plane pseudo color. uerf -R|more gives me this info
about the graphics adapter....
        tga0: depth 32, map size 32MB, _1280x1024

Is it obvious what the problem is here? I can't make sense of
xstdcmap.. was thinking I could create my own colormap that
might work....

It sounds trivial perhaps, but if we can't get SoftWindows
running we'll have to buy a bunch of REAL PCs. Note that
mpeg_play will not compile on these machines, and even
when DISPLAYing from a remote machine, it doesn't work.

alphavcr, when run on these machines and displayed to another
machine works fine.

Thanks for any advice, or direction on where to look for an
answer.
