Question:
How to make files under a different directory tree be accessed
by the anonymous ftp account.
Summary of replies:
It is a known feature that, for security reason, the anonymous
ftp account does an implicite chroot at its start up, making only
one file system it can see, and nothing else. This file system is
the one where its default login directory resides (as specified in passwd).
To get round that, I have received three suggestions:
a. physically move/copy the data that you want to be visiable
by this account to a subdirectory under the account,
b. if the data directory concerned resides in the same file system,
use hardlink to point to the data directory,
c. mount the data directory using nfs with a mount point under the
ftp directory, eg. mount local:/data /utility/ftp/pub/data.
In my particular case, the data directory tree that I want to
be seen by the ftp account is the one NFS-mounted from another
host running a different operating system. So, I go for the
first suggestion and mount the data tree again onto a ftp subdirectory.
I did try the 3rd suggestion, but somehow I can only access the
first level of subdirectory (eg /utility/ftp/pub/data/ukmodata)
and not below (/utility/ftp/pub/data/ukmodata/*).
