When you do a full restore (restore -r), restore records the mapping
between i-numbers on the tape (in the old file system) and filenames in
the new file system in restoresymtable. Subsequent incremental restores
read the symbol table so that, for example, if the tape data says that
i-node 278 should be cleared, restore can find the corresponding file
and remove it.
That's all it's for; once you're done restoring, the file is useless and
can be removed.
