NFSV2 vs. NFSV3

Hi folks...

We have several alphastations (of various speeds) running OSF/1 3.2
version 214.

I have noticed the following problems when using NFSV3 mounts:

(a) NFSV3 mount to a RS6000 (one that also supports NFSV3): strange write
errors occur during various operations...most notably I get some "ftruncate"
error when linking a large file...the problem goes away when I make the mount
using NFSV2...

(b) doing a "dd" from a disk on machine A to a tape drive on machine B
(this is a 8200 EXABYTE...which shouldn't be able to do more than 250
kbytes/s) causes the network to become completely crippled (we are
running coax/BNC ethernet) when the access is made from machine B via
NFSV3. Backing off to NFSV2 seems to improve the situation...we still get
high collision rates but no longer the crippling

This leads me to wonder if there is a bug in NFSV3 for OSF/1 3.2-214....
or maybe a bug in the "TULIP" driver?

Does anyone know?

ALSO: The alpha's appear to be just too fast for our poor ethernet...
can the ethernet access (especially NFS) of the alpha be "throttled back"
by adjustment to kernel parameters or other configuration parameters?

Your help is greatly appreciated...
I will post a summary...

thanks...
