Original question: How many users can be in a group?

Answers: I received several replies suggesting that I use this group as
the primary gid for the users. This answer, although viable, doesn't fit
into our user environment. Thanks to those who suggested it though.

The most complete answer and the one that gave me the info
I needed to send to the application vendor was:

>From: Spider Boardman <spider_at_orb.nashua.nh.us>

>The limit for a single line in /etc/group depends on which
>software is parsing it. For getgrent() and friends, the limit is
>a bit under 8192 characters on the line. For getgrent_r() and
>friends, it's up to the supplied scratch-pad buffer size from the
>caller. NIS has a limit based on ndbm itself, such that less
>than 1024 characters are allowed in the group.byname and
>group.bygid maps.

>However, the /etc/group file can list multiple entries with the
>same name and gid, with differing user lists. Older versions of
>DEC OSF/1 had a limit of 1024-character lines, and 100 members
>listed per line, but that was lifted in v3.0.

Thanks very much, Spider. We have sent this information on to the
vendor requiring a gid for each user using the tool.
