Loosing connection with the server

Hi,
J notice some strange behiaviors (for me) with a DEC alpha 3000/500 which is a
client of a DEC alpha 2000 4/200 named 'caronte': infact sometimes, but in the
last days very often, it gives the messages on its console (but also when the
user is working with a terminal)

NFS caronte not responding still trying
 NFS caronte OK

and this is repeated many times in a day (only this morning 40 times in a step
of few seconds). What is the problem, perhaps in the connections (we have had a
problem with the ethernet cable only few months ago), or this is normal?
With the same machine J cannot make the software reboot ( shutdown -r ), because
appear the message

 Portmapper not responding still trying

and the system don't go down. Only by pressing the halt botton, J can make the
reboot at the >> prompt (with no strange message). Then the machine seems to
work fine.

Someone can give me some ideas ? (probably these are sample questions, but for
not for me because J am quite new to this job).
Thanks to everyone who reply my questions.
Bye.
Serena
