This isn't english to me, so perhaps someone can help.

I am currently working on adding this entry into the
/usr/sys/data/cam_data.c and rebuilding the kernel. I am hoping this is
the right direction to take to solve the problem.

Replace the drive. These errors just started appearing out of the blue,
the drive has been working properly for months on end. So, the drive has
gone south.

We also use Sony DDS-2 tape, is this a reliable or unreliable brand?

Atleast this DAT drive is still under warranty.
