Our Alpha Server 2100 4/200 is crashing on boot up.

I was attempting to rebuild the kernel. Here's the steps I took up until
the crashing started.
# cp /vmunix /usr/vmunix.save
# cp /genvmunix /vmunix
# /usr/sbin/shutdown -r +5 "Shutting down to build new kernel"

upon reboot the system crashes with the following. It starts to boot
and gets to a certain point and then

trap: invalid memory write access from kernel mode

        faulting address: ...
        pc of failure instruction:
ra contents at time of fault:
sp contents at time of fault:

panic (cpu 0): kernel memory fault
syncing disks
DUMP:

What do I need to do get get the system up quickly. Or is this root disk
gone south.

Any comments, directions, or pointers are always appreciated.

thanks,
Greg
