Identd under OSF 3.0

Our main OSF 3.0 system is being eaten alive by identd requests.
When this happens load average skyrockets and and performance
degrades.

I've being trying to get pidentd 2.6.1 to run in "wait" mode,
the prefered way, which causes a single instance of the daemon
to answer all requests.

While it works fine in the default, "nowait" mode, "wait" mode causes
every request to be responded to as an illegal request.

Has anyone gotten this to work? Any magic answers?

Thanks in advance.
